Travelling to the EU

Your travel checklist for plain sailing

We know travelling can be stressful and it can seem like there's a lot to prepare. But travelling to the EU is remarkably easy when you follow this simple guide. Here are the basics of what you should know, however, you should always check the latest 168澳洲体彩幸运10开奖官方开奖结果 实时直播 历史号码 精准数据统计official guidance.

Travelling to the UK

Travel requirements to the UK are changing. For information about the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and changes to eVisas, please check our information on travelling to the UK.

Your British passport should be:

  • Less than 10 years old on the day you enter the EU (this is 10 years from the date the passport was issued, please check your 'date of issue')

  • Valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave

If you plan to stay in the EU for longer than 90 days during a 180-day period or are planning to work or study, you may need a visa.

If you have a non-UK passport, check your entry requirements with your embassy, high commission or consulate. Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland cannot travel using their ID card and must have a valid passport to enter the UK unless exempt.

Advanced Passenger Information (API)

For travel to or from the UK, you must provide Advanced Passenger Information. This is a legal requirement from the UK government and must be provided at least 24 hours before your date of departure

British passport holders are restricted to spending 90 days in the EU Schengen Area within a 180-day period. The number of countries you visit in the Schengen Area during that period does not matter, but the overall period of stay must not exceed a total of 90 days.

To travel, dogs, cats and ferrets must have either an EU-issued pet passport or an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). GB-issued pet passports will not be accepted. You can ensure your pet's documentation is compliant before travel by using our free and secure pet travel pre-check service.

For other pets, you may need an EU Health or CITES certificate. For more information, there are English versions available on the official governmental websites for those travelling to France and those travelling to Spain.

You should make sure that you have appropriate travel insurance for your trip.

Our award-winning travel insurance partner, Voyager, offers both travel insurance and breakdown cover at competitive prices. With travel insurance from £15pp and breakdown cover from as little as £3 a day, it's an affordable option.

If you have a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) or EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), remember to take it with you.

> Travel insurance and breakdown cover

To drive your vehicle in France or Spain, you must have:

  • A valid driving licence

  • Your vehicle's V5C logbook

  • Vehicle insurance with coverage for driving in Europe

  • Valid road tax

  • Valid MOT

  • A UK identifier on your vehicle (not GB)

  • A Crit'Air sticker if you are driving in France in areas covered by low-emission zones

Low-emissions zones in France

Le Havre and its port are within a low-emissions zone (ZFE). Other cities operating zones include Caen, Rouen, Rennes and Nantes. You must display the Crit'Air sticker for your vehicle and follow the procedures for driving in these areas. Stickers cost less than €5 including postage and should be purchased from the French government site. If you drive in a zone without displaying a sticker you may be fined.

We also recommend having European breakdown cover, which can be bought through our travel insurance provider.

In some circumstances, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP). If you are taking a lease or hire vehicle abroad from the UK, you will need a VE103 certificate. You should get this from your vehicle hire company before you travel.

While Spain operates low-emissions zones, foreign vehicles are not required to have Spanish low-emission zone stickers.

UK government travel advice

Please make sure you check the latest 168澳洲体彩幸运10开奖官方开奖结果 实时直播 历史号码 精准数据统计official government information before travelling. It is your responsibility to ensure you check and comply with the regulations for the country you are visiting and that you have the required documentation when you arrive at the port. You will not be permitted to travel if you fail to produce the required documentation for your journey.

TRAVELLING TO THE EU FAQS

You may be asked to show proof of where you intend to stay, for example, a booking confirmation or proof of address if visiting your own property (e.g. a second home). If you are staying with friends or family you may need to obtain an ’attestation d’accueil’ in France or a ‘carta de invitation’ in Spain (welcome invitation) from your host.

You may also need to show proof that you have sufficient funds for the duration of your stay.

You must identify that your vehicle is from the UK when driving abroad. If you have a GB sticker, you must cover or remove it.

You do not need a UK sticker to drive in France if your number plate includes the UK identifier with the Union flag.

If your number plate has any of the following, you must display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle when in France:

  • a GB identifier with the Union flag (also known as the Union Jack)

  • a Euro symbol

  • a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales

  • numbers and letters only - no flag or identifier

If you are driving in Spain, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is on your number plate.

As a general rule, you cannot take the following into the EU from the UK:

  • Plants and plant products

  • Products of animal origin (POAO) such as meat or dairy

For more detailed information, see the French Customs website

You can bring a variety of goods into the UK from the EU for personal use or to give as gifts. You can find more details on the Government website.

Restrictions on foods you can bring into the UK

Due to the presence of foot and mouth disease in the EU, UK Government restrictions mean you cannot currently bring meat, dairy and other animal products into the UK. This includes pre-packaged items such as sandwiches and items bought at duty free. Please check the Government's list of restricted items. If found with such items at the border, you will need to surrender these items and run the risk of being fined.

If you have a European Health Insurance Card, it can still be used until it expires. After that date, you will need to apply for a new EHIC (subject to specific conditions) or a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). More information can be found on the NHS website.

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a new type of travel authorisation that will be required when entering EU countries in the Schengen Area without a visa from 2025. It is similar to the ESTA to enter the USA. The ETIAS is not available yet and will be coming in 2025.
