Travelling to the UK

Your travel checklist for plain sailing

We know travelling can be stressful and it can seem like there's a lot to prepare. But travelling to the UK is remarkably simple. Here are the basics of what you should know, however, you should always check the latest 168澳洲体彩幸运10开奖官方开奖结果 实时直播 历史号码 精准数据统计official guidance.

Your passport

You must have a valid and in-date passport to travel to the United Kingdom. It should be valid for the whole duration of your stay.

Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland cannot travel using their ID card and must have a valid passport to enter the UK unless exempt. Children travelling in school groups can travel using their identity card without a passport.

For other nationalities, please check your entry requirements with your embassy, high commission or consulate.

ETA

If you don't need a visa and are visiting the UK for a short stay of less than six months, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel to the UK. This includes European citizens from 2 April 2025.

You should apply for an ETA before you travel. It will last for two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner, and allows multiple trips within that period.

Download the UK ETA app or go to the UK Government website to apply: www.gov.uk/electronic-travel-authorisation.

eVisas

The UK is moving from physical immigration documents to eVisas. If you hold a UK visa and use a physical immigration document to prove your rights, you should take action now to access your eVisa by creating a UK Visas and Immigration account: www.gov.uk/eVisa.

If you already have an eVisa, please tell the UK Government about the passport you intend to use for travel if it is not already linked to your eVisa UK Visas and Immigration account: www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details.

EU citizens can stay in the UK for up to six months without a visa, in most cases.

For other nationalities, please check with your embassy, high commission or consulate.

TRAVELLING TO THE UK FAQS

You can bring a variety of goods into the UK from the EU for personal use or to give as gifts. You can find more details on the Government website.

Restrictions on foods you can bring into the UK

Due to the presence of foot and mouth disease in the EU, UK Government restrictions mean you cannot currently bring meat, dairy and other animal products into the UK. This includes pre-packaged items such as sandwiches and items bought at duty free. Please check the Government's list of restricted items. If found with such items at the border, you will need to surrender these items and run the risk of being fined.

As a general rule, you cannot take the following into the EU from the UK:

  • Plants and plant products

  • Products of animal origin (POAO) such as meat or dairy

For more detailed information, see the French Customs website.

Yes, you can use an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) in the UK for emergency healthcare. It is called a CEAM (carte européenne d'assurance maladie) in France or TSE (Tarjeta Sanitaria Europea) in Spain.
