TAKING YOUR PET ABROAD

Before you travel

With pet travel available from as little as £35 to France and £50 to Spain, there’s no need to leave your four-legged friends behind.

There are several steps to taking your pet abroad but, once you’ve got everything planned, it’s simpler than you might think.

Essentials to bring

These are some of the most essential items you should bring for your pet to make their journey more comfortable.

  • A muzzle for dogs - they must be muzzled when outside of your vehicle

  • Absorbent bedding for your car, the kennel or your pet-friendly cabin

  • Nappy sacks and tissues in case of accidents

  • Some of their favourite toys to help make them comfortable

  • Water in a spill-safe container that can be attached to a travelling crate or left on the floor of your vehicle/pet-friendly cabin

For pets staying in the car or kennel, make sure the water container is filled with clean, fresh water and that they can reach it throughout the sailing.

Dogs, cats and ferrets

The UK has now left the European Union and you can find the latest 168澳洲体彩幸运10开奖官方开奖结果 实时直播 历史号码 精准数据统计guidance from DEFRA on taking your pet to the EU here.

Other pets which are not dogs, cats or ferrets (e.g. turtles or parrots)

If you would like to take a pet that is not a dog, cat or ferret to France and Spain then the rules have changed. You may need an EU Health or CITES certificate. For more information, there are English versions available on the official governmental websites for those travelling to France and those travelling to Spain.

Should you have a specific question regarding your pet travel following EU exit, please email us at [email protected].

The safety and well-being of your pet is the most important thing to consider when travelling. So you should choose a sailing time which is suited to your pet's needs.

For example, some dogs are more prone to heatstroke so it's best to avoid travelling on hot days. If your dog is susceptible to overheating, such as pugs and bulldogs or breeds with very thick coats, then travel overnight or first thing in the morning when the temperature is cooler.

Dogs with certain medical conditions or on some types of medication are also more at risk as well as very young or old dogs. We strongly recommend you get your vet to perform a health check before travelling to ensure your pet is fit to travel.

Wherever you go, ensure it's safe for your pet. If you're staying in a rural area, check the local hunting seasons and be mindful of snakes and other creatures. Some French beaches are out of bounds for dogs so you'll need to check which ones you can visit with them.

You should always have a tag on your pet's collar with your telephone number on it that includes your international dialing code.

And most importantly, make sure you locate a good vet to administer the tapeworm treatment for your dog before your return to the UK. We have a list of vets near our ports that we recommend.

We recommend that you speak to your authorised vet and keep up to date with DEFRA guidelines on the gov.uk website

You will no longer be able to travel with a GB-issued EU pet passport, so you will need an EU Animal Health Certificate or EU Pet Passport issued by another EU country or Northern Ireland. These rules apply to assistance dogs too.

Please remember that you will need a new AHC every time that you travel to an EU country. If you are travelling with a pet which is not a dog, cat or ferret, then you will need a health or CITES certificate.

Take a look at our information on pet travel documentation for detailed advice about filling in a pet passport or AHC.

You can also find more information and guidance, in English, on the official French and Spanish governmental pages for pet travel to France or Spain.
