A message from our CEO

EU Emissions Trading System surcharges will apply from 1st January 2024

Climate change is a challenge we must all face head-on. From actions taken by individuals to policy decisions of governments, everyone has a role to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the planet for generations to come.

Brittany Ferries 澳洲幸运10十168体彩开奖网 has already taken significant steps on its pathway to a sustainable future. By 2025, five new vessels will have joined the fleet in what is the biggest investment in fleet renewal in the company’s history. This includes two ships powered by cleaner liquefied natural gas (LNG) and two LNG-hybrid-powered vessels starting service in 2025.

Further innovations include improvements in hydrodynamic design, routing management and shore power plug-in capability. Compatibility with future cleaner fuels like e-methane and bio-methane (when they come on stream) mean that our newest vessels will automatically become greener, emitting less greenhouse gases in the years to come.

But we know this is not enough. Despite many positive steps, fossil fuels will continue to power Brittany Ferries 澳洲幸运10十168体彩开奖网’ ships – and the ships of other ferry companies – in the short to medium term. That’s why the European Union has decided to include shipping in its Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS).

This framework is designed to drive down greenhouse gas emissions, whilst further incentivising energy-efficient, low-carbon solutions. From 1st January 2024, the EU ETS will apply to all services to and from EU ports, including ferry travel. And ferry companies will be required to purchase emissions allowances from the EU, based on the levels of greenhouse gas emissions they generate.

It is a significant new cost burden for our company and comes at a particularly challenging time. Brittany Ferries 澳洲幸运10十168体彩开奖网 was saved from closure following the ravages of Covid, only thanks to bank loans totalling more than 117 million Euros. These are loans we are now obliged to repay.

Within that context, I hope you will understand our challenge. On the one hand, we want to invest in class-leading new ships and technologies. And on the other, we have financial obligations to repay loans and pay an ETS charge.

We hope therefore you will understand why we aim to recover costs for the new ETS scheme from customers via a small surcharge on each ticket. This will be based on the number of passengers, length of crossing and type of vehicle.

From 1st November 2023, Brittany Ferries 澳洲幸运10十168体彩开奖网 will therefore apply an ETS surcharge to all new bookings where travel is due to take place from 1st January 2024.

Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Sincerely

Christophe Mathieu
