What is Hybrid-LNG?

Leading the way in cleaner cross-channel ferry travel

Founded in 1973, and still largely owned by French farmers in our local region of Brittany, at Brittany Ferries 澳洲幸运10十168体彩开奖网 we hold a strong belief and commitment for preserving our environment.

It is this commitment that led us to make the largest investment in the company’s 50-year history; a six-year plan to introduce five new, greener, cleaner ships across our route network.

And whilst the first three ships (Galicia, Salamanca and Santoña), each helped moved us a step closer to a more sustainable future, in 2025, Saint-Malo and Guillaume de Normandie will go even further.

Our new hybrid ship, Saint-Malo

A breath of fresh air - a first for cross-Channel ferries

Powered by a hybrid-propulsion system, each ship combines liquefied natural gas (LNG) - currently considered the most eco-responsible fossil fuel available - with electric-power, a little like a hybrid car.

This combination means the ship consumes less fuel overall. Greenhouse gas emissions from the funnel come down by up to 10%, while cleaner combustion means air quality pollutants like soot and sulphur dioxide are cut to almost zero throughout the voyage.

Furthermore, their engines will be fuel agnostic. This will allow the introduction, without technical modification, of forthcoming renewable fuels such as bio-methane; reducing future emissions even further.

While manoeuvring, as well as when berthing and departing, the ship will run solely on electric power. That means the lowest possible environmental impact in the most sensitive areas of operation – our port towns, where residents (and of course our passengers) will benefit from cleaner air.

The ships’ batteries, can also be plugged-in during these port calls (when the infrastructure allows), boosting charge up to 11.2 MWh. The largest battery capacity on a ferry to date.

Smoother sailings by day, and night

With two 13,740 kW internal combustion engines, whilst at sea, Saint-Malo and Guillaume de Normandie can reach an average speed of 23 knots. The electrical system is used to complement engine operation, maintaining optimum engine speed while consuming as little energy as possible.

This is particularly relevant for medium or low speed operation, such as during Saint-Malo's longer overnight crossings. Typically, this is when a ship runs only one engine. On a conventional ferry, stopping one engine also stops the propeller. And this increases drag in the water, making it less energy efficient. But for the new ships, a single engine can produce electricity needed to power both propellers.

This comes without disrupting energy efficiency - and without disturbing passengers' sleep. So, day or night, everyone can enjoy a calm crossing knowing they are travelling on the most efficient, modern ship in the fleet.

For the crew, the ships’ long slender hulls make the new ships easy to navigate. Anti-roll fin stabilisers give her excellent handling, even in rough seas. And from the bridge, the captain can use the smart quay system, a new intelligent navigation tool, to moor the boat quickly and smoothly, ensuring everyone benefits from the latest 168澳洲体彩幸运10开奖官方开奖结果 实时直播 历史号码 精准数据统计innovations these fantastic ships have to offer.
