High on a hill in the heart of the Cherbourg peninsula the lovely medieval town of Coutances can be seen from miles away. Steep narrow streets wind their way to the summit and the beautifully impressive Gothic cathedral, whilst down below the fountained public botanical gardens are illuminated at night during the summer. Despite 60% of the town being destroyed during WWII, Coutances survived very well and has some interesting architecture and buildings of interest including St Nicholas church which is used for exhibitions, the Hotel Dieu which was originally an old hospital and the Quesnel-Morinière museum of art. Coutances is also known for its cheese - very rich and high in calories but totally delicious - and its jazz music festival held annually in May.
