San Sebastián is known as one of the gastronomical capitals of the world, boasting 16 Michelin stars within 20 kilometres of the city. But fine dining doesn’t always present an affordable, accessible option for families looking to sample the local cuisine.
Happily, San Sebastián ’s culinary culture extends far beyond the Michelin Guide - with a whole host of family-friendly restaurants to choose from, for an altogether more relaxed dining experience. You won’t have to travel far to find something delicious for all the family - and you might even be able to take your four-legged friend along with you.
Restaurant Igeldo
Restaurant Igeldo overlooks La Concha Bay, offering gorgeous views of the beach for you to take in throughout your meal. With a menu heavily inspired by local produce - including, of course, seafood, Restaurant Igeldo can be relied upon to serve up fresh, tasty dishes full of quintessential Basque flavour.
With grilled seasonal seafood and shellfish, you can expect hake, sole, crab, clams and squid delivered directly from the harbour, from the city’s best suppliers. There’s a children’s menu to choose from, and a selection of simple snacks, should your kids prefer a more familiar plate!
Harbourside views from Restaurant Igeldo
Known for their friendly service, Restaurant Igeldo is happy to make dietary accommodations for diners, including celiac and gluten-intolerant visitors.
The restaurant is ideally-located for families, situated near the city’s popular aquarium and within walking distance of the Ciudad de San Sebastián drop off, for those of you who’ve taken the boat tour. With two nearby car parks to choose from, families visiting San Sebastián needn’t feel culinarily restricted – you can park up and order your mains in a matter of minutes.

Abarka Jatetxea
Abarka Jatetxea is a must for the carnivores of the family. One of Trip Advisor’s top-rated San Sebastián restaurants, the steakhouse is beloved for its classic Basque flavours and inviting atmosphere.
Whilst beef is very much the focus of the menu - as is typical of the region - there are delicious Mediterranean and Spanish options for those of you who prefer fish - or plant-based dishes. With parking directly outside, it’s as practical an option as it is crowd-pleasing, where you’ll find something for everyone to enjoy.

Rekondo
Take a break from the beach and enjoy a stunning bite to eat on Rekondo’s terrace. A family-run restaurant with unforgettable views of La Concha Bay, Rekondo represents the very best of Basque dining, in a wonderfully relaxed setting - there’s no standing on ceremony here.
As a former farmhouse situated on the way up to Mount Igeldo, the entire ethos of this spot is that the produce of the land and sea should always come first. Sourcing the area’s best ingredients and celebrating the original flavours of Basque cuisine through traditional products, supplied directly to the kitchen - there’s something outstanding for everyone on the menu.
Blending the traditional with the modern, Rekondo dishes boast some of the most unique flavours and textures of Donostia’s gastronomical scene, pioneered by Chef Iñaki Arrieta.
The exquisite interior at Rekondo
Expect perfectly grilled seafood, arguably the best steak and chips in San Sebastián, and a mouthwatering selection of desserts. The wine cellar is similarly revered - long-recognised as one of San Sebastián’s finest, it’s overseen by world-class sommelier Martín Flea and features one of the world’s great collections of Château Mouton-Rothschild.
Whilst it’s definitely at the upper end of affordability, so much of Rekondo’s charm is derived from its welcoming, familiar atmosphere. If you’re keen to share your passion for food with your kids, make sure you book well in advance.

Casa Urola
The unassuming façade of Casa Urola blends seamlessly in with the throng of pintxos bars on the busy Calle Fermin Calbetón. But for those in the know, this first-floor dining room is a cut above the casual snack bars below.
Casa Urola excels at traditional Basque market cooking, with signature seafood dishes including hake in green sauce, chargrilled turbot, and rice with clams.
Using peerless raw materials treated without fuss or pretension, the simplicity of Pablo Loureiro’s cooking is radical and brave. The menestra - an assembly of spring vegetables tasting supremely of themselves - is a true testament to the power of local produce, cooked with love.
It’s worth remembering that for all its excellence, this is food the whole family can enjoy, with a range of mains to choose from, grilled to perfection.

Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants in San Sebastián
There are a whole host of restaurants with either plenty of plant-based options, or entirely vegetarian menus, in San Sebastián.
Whilst it’s fairly common to find veggie dishes available even at the most meat- and fish-oriented eateries, there are a couple of stand-out spots we’d be remiss not to mention for the veg lovers amongst those of you visiting San Sebastián.
Bar Arenales
What was once a neighbourhood hangout on the boulevard is now a bistro breaking new ground in San Sebastián’s traditional gastronomical scene. With a modern take on plant-based cooking and a gorgeous selection of natural wines, Bar Arenales is a must if you love vegetarian cuisine and organic methods.
With delicious vegan options too, there’s no shortage of dishes to choose from - a breath of fresh air for those of you familiar with one vegetarian option on restaurant menus. (If not every family member is a practising vegetarian, they’ll be happy to know there are a variety of seafood options, too.)
Don’t be deceived by the low-key exterior - this is a superb restaurant with reliably good vibes.

Celebrating Basque flavours and natural, local produce of the highest quality, you’ll enjoy plates of mushroom risotto, vegan lasagne and beautifully dressed Navarra asparagus, amongst much more.
Don’t be distracted by the pintxos offering - make sure you book into the restaurant for a delicious veggie meal, perfect for the whole family.

We understand that kids might not always be able to sit still for a three-course meal. If they’re getting a little restless, consider paying up after your mains and wandering down to Gelateria Boulevard for your dessert.
