Saiaz Getaria 2*

The lovely Saiaz Getaria is in one of the narrow streets at the top of the old town and looks down over Gaztetape beach below from the rear. This beautifully renovated 15th century building is a well blended mix of old and new and behind the somewhat austere stone façade lies an attractive interior and a warm welcome. Bedrooms are all individually furnished and breakfast each morning is a feast. You couldn't wish for a nicer place to stay. Pet accepted 12€/night.

The lovely coastal fishing port and resort of Getaria is on a small peninsula midway between Lekeito and San Sebastian and is one of the main centres for the production of txakoli, the local white wine. It has an attractive old quarter, 2 beaches, a charming harbour and there are plenty of excellent restaurants, particularly if you like fish and seafood. The famous fashion designer Balenciaga was born here and has a museum dedicated to him and there are several interesting historical buildings that are in sharp contrast to the pretty little fishermen houses with their whitewashed walls and colourful wooden balconies.

For something a little more energetic, why not walk the coastal route east to Zarautz (approximately 4km) or climb Monte de San Antón, the hill behind the harbour known as the Mouse of Getaria from where you can see across to Biarritz on a good day. It is also only a short drive (6km) from here to Zumaia where some of the scenes in Game of Thrones were filmed.
