Pousada de São Bartolomeu

The Pousada de São Bartolomeu is a short walk from the old town of Bragança and is named after the hill on which it sits. Unlike many other Pousadas it is a modern building, and the view down towards the city across the plateau to the mountains beyond is just breathtaking. Well appointed bedrooms have a balcony with a view of the pool (open June-Sept) and 17th century castle which is floodlit at night, and its excellent restaurant has a Michelin star (closed Jan & Mon all year). Pet accepted (1 per room) 25€/night.

Dating back to Roman times, Bragança is in a relatively remote province of Portugal that has a wild and beautiful landscape. Close to the Montesinho natural park where boar and other game still roam, this area is ideal for outdoor leisure pursuits and is perhaps not one of the most common tourist spots, but it has an interesting history. Whilst here don't forget to try the local cheese.
