Parador de Corias 4*

Across the road from the river Narcea, this impressive Benedictine monastery is one of the later established Paradores and has been declared a national historic-artistic monument. Skillfully renovated, the interior has retained many of its architectural features including a Tuscan style church and a cloister surrounding two central courtyards, all of which have been cleverly integrated alongside the contemporary, upmarket accommodation. There is a large restaurant and bar/cafeteria plus a spa pool and gym. Beauty treatments are available too (extra charge). There is even a small museum housing the archaeological remains and relics found during the renovation. Pets not accepted.

Surrounded by forest and rural landscape, this is an area of great natural beauty and is an excellent base for exploring this somewhat remote part of Asturias which includes the Fuente del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias natural park, a rural habitat for brown bears and the Iberian wolf. Its a great place for hikers and there are many marked paths to follow or guided walks are available.

2km south of the Parador is the charming village of Cangas de Narcea. One of its focal points is the suspension bridge - Puente Colgante - which connects the centre to a residential area across the river. Others include lovely churches, palaces and mansion houses dotted around as well as several good bodegas and an interesting wine museum.
