Next door to the Royal Ropeworks, the longest building in France, this impressive hotel is built in the same elegant architectural style, with tasteful contemporary decor. The town of Rochefort was built as an important naval base in the 17th century and is no doubt best known for the famous Corderie Royale, France's former principal ropemaking centre which is now a large museum dedicated to its history. Surrounded by gardens, Jardin des Retours, the building is longer than the height of the Eiffel tower and is popular with visitors who come to learn of its former glory as well as visiting the arsenal where the warships were built and the Hermione, an impressive replica of an 18th century ship. However, Rochefort is also a charming town in its own right. As well as several museums, it has the country's last working transporter bridge, an important thermal spa and its town centre is a lovely place to explore.
