A short drive from Dinan (11km), the quiet beckoning of woods and countryside competes with the call of the sea for guests of a former Breton farmhouse which overlooks the calm beauty of the Rance estuary. The superb traditional country Manoir de Rigourdaine and its annexe offers an excellent base for seeing the beautiful area and all that Dinan has to offer. Cosy and welcoming wood-beamed rooms all have a river view, an excellent breakfast is served each morning and, although there is no restaurant, evening snacks are available in the bar and there is a weekend crêperie. Family and triple rooms are duplex with open tread steps up to mezzanine beds. No Wi-Fi access in bedrooms. Pets not accepted.

The fabulously quaint riverside town of Dinan with its ancient ramparts is one of Brittany's most picturesque. Its well preserved old town is lovely with its colourful half timbered houses and maze of cobbled streets lined with galleries, gift shops and delightful little bars and crêperies. It has a 13th century château that now houses a museum charting the town's long heritage and history, and it's also the best place to start exploring the defensive walls that are 3km in length and probably the most impressive of any in the region - there is even a festival held every other year to honour and celebrate their importance. And, if you have the energy, the 158 step climb to the top of the Tour de l'Horloge is well worth it for wonderful views stretching as far as Mont St Michel on a clear day. Dinan is well known for its art and crafts too and is full of artists, sculptors and glass blowers, many of whom display their products at the Thursday morning market or in the little shops that line the Rue du Petit Fort, the steep cobbled street that leads down to the port and features on many a postcard. Pretty old stone houses line the quay, many of which have been converted into great restaurants which are popular with tourists year round.
