Le Pélican 3*

The pleasant Le Pélican is a former 18th century coaching inn alongside the road, opposite 2 churches in the village centre. It has a very good restaurant (closed Sun/Mon) which is well known locally and features traditional French cuisine using regional produce, plus a small but pleasant bar area. Pet accepted 5€/night. Free public parking.

Vernantes is known locally as the '2 churches village' as it literally has 2 churches just 50m apart, one dating back to the 12th century whilst the other is more recently the 19th century.

Surrounded by forests ideal for walking, Vernantes is just over the border from the Loire Valley so is well placed for exploring the region as there are many interesting places within a 50km radius including the beautiful château and the Cadre Noir riding school in Saumur (19km), the château and golf in Baugé (20km) and the château and lovely town of Chinon (45km). A little closer to home there is a museum in Parçay les Pins (10km) dedicated to Jules Desbois the sculptor which is highly recommended as well as a small shop in Vernoil (2km) which sells local, home-made oils - chestnut, avocado and marrow to name a few.
