If bars and clubs aren’t for you, head to Monte Urgull, a lush, tree-covered hill with one of the best vantage points from which to enjoy the twinkling lights of San Sebastián’s Old Town.

It’s surrounded by a historic military fortress and museum, making it a popular place to visit during the day, but it’s an incredible spot to watch the sunset from too, with wonderful city and ocean views in every direction.

San Sebastián’s best bars can be found in the four main nightlife areas across the city - whether you’re looking for a laid-back beer at the end of a day’s surfing, or keen to hit up a couple of late-night hotspots, you can be sure you’ll enjoy yourself.

Parte Vieja

Parte Vieja, or the Old Town, boasts a diverse selection of lively bars and pubs spread across a number of gorgeous squares. Plaza de la Constitución is perhaps the most famous amongst them, with a reliably bustling, vibrant atmosphere all year round.

It’s also the host to important local fiestas like the Tamborrada - so you’re likely to stumble upon it if you’re visiting during one of the many Basque Country festivals. Swing by for an al fresco beer and a bite to eat, and watch as the square’s pintxos bars are transformed into live music venues.

The Reyes Católicos

The Reyes Católicos is a pedestrianised street running through the city, popular with tourists and locals alike. Lined with plenty of bars, restaurants and live music venues, this trendy street sits beneath the Buen Pastor Cathedral, which is lit up dramatically as night falls - making the street a gorgeous spot to wile away a couple of hours.

There’s something for everyone - whether you prefer a traditional Basque affair or a more contemporary vibe, strictly Spanish produce or food and drink from further afield, you’ll enjoy a huge variety of options for any given evening on the chic Reyes Católicos.

Get down to Pokhara to enjoy a menu of classic drinks in a quintessentially European cafe bar - marble bar tops and brass accessories galore. You should expect crowds, especially once the terrace is transformed to host DJs and dancing at nighttime, but the buzz more than makes up for the busyness.

Enjoy a carajillo (a shot of espresso, whiskey or rum, and heavy cream) with friends - the most delicious after-hours drink in a spot beloved for over 20 years.

Egia

The Egia neighbourhood has been described as the perfect mixture of culture - home to residents with a predilection for the avant-garde, this is an area which fuses art and nature to spectacular effect.

We’d recommend taking a look around the Tabakalera - the city’s tobacco factory for 90 years, it’s since been converted into an incredible centre for contemporary cultures. With free general admission, it’s open until 9pm Sunday to Thursday, and 10pm Friday and Saturday - making it a fabulous precursor to your late-night plans. (There’s even a restaurant on the top floor should you harbour a penchant for nightscapes.)

Later on, be sure to check out Dabadaba, one of Egia’s hidden gems, all but hidden behind the train station, down a dark alleyway. Make your way down to discover the hipster’s answer to San Sebastián’s club scene. With several gigs every week from indie bands from across the globe, and an admirable craft beer selection, make this your last port of call in Egia.

Known locally as the SoHo of Donostia, Egia is the ultimate spot for visitors to San Sebastián looking to immerse themselves in the very coolest of Basque culture. With a micro-theatre and a whole host of live music venues, it’s a no-brainer for those looking to fit something extra into their night out - an evening in Egia is guaranteed to be memorable.

Gros

Gros sits between two of San Sebastián’s most famous landmarks - the Kursaal Palace and Monte Ulia sandwich this hip neighbourhood, securing its must-see status for those keen to soak up San Sebastián’s sights.

Despite the area’s esteemed bookends, it’s best known for its beach, Playa Zurriola, a surfer’s paradise that draws visitors from all over the world. As is typical of most surfing hotspots, the crowd is cool, alternative and likely to be lugging a surfboard behind them.

The bar culture in Gros is similarly chilled, with plenty of watering holes attracting the day’s beachgoers once night has fallen.

We’d recommend visiting La Gintonería Donostiarra for a gin and tonic unlike any you’ve had before. Owner and mixologist, Txema Huici, painstakingly crafted the menu of over 150 gins, all of which are served in oversized fishbowl glasses alongside a premium tonic of your choosing.

A relaxed spot to catch up with friends, swing by every day except for Monday to enjoy a refreshing tipple.

Whisky lovers, rejoice! Bar Museo Del Whisky has one of the largest collections of whisky in the world, with over 3,400 bottles spread across two floors. Whether you drink yours neat, on the rocks, or prefer a whisky-based cocktail, this world-famous liquor purveyor spells fun for everyone.

Espazio Oteiza is located on the terrace of the breathtaking Akelarre Hotel, perched on Mount Igueldo. Helmed by Patxi Troitino, known as the grandfather of the modern cocktail scene in San Sebastián and a professor of the Basque Culinary Institute, it’s no surprise that Troitino’s flavour combinations produce some of the best cocktails in the Basque Country.

Sip on a Golden Turbulence (dry vermouth, elderflower, lime, and sparkling wine) whilst you take in the stunning views of the Bay of Biscay, stretching out as far as the eye can see. Sought after as much for its menu as its location, if you only visit one cocktail bar in San Sebastián, make it this one.

You’ll find most of the neighbourhood bars close around 3am to allow the locals a few hours of respite before the coastal city wakes up. Late-night revellers need not fear, however, as the party continues in San Sebastián’s port, with beaches Zurriola and La Concha boasting several seafront nightclubs apiece.

The Victoria Café can be found buried in the basement of the Belle Epoque Victoria Eugenia theatre. Trading in pintxos and aperitifs during the day, this little gem transforms after midnight into a club playing electronic, reggaeton and pop music until late. You’ll find it by following the queue!

There’s an entry fee, but it includes a free drink, and you’re guaranteed a great night amongst an eclectic mix of people.

We’d be remiss not to mention San Sebastián’s leading nightclub, Bataplán Disco. Founded in 1979, it’s come to be known as one of the best nights in the region - achieving nominations from the World’s Best Clubs Top 100 List in both 2019 and 2022.

If you need another reason to visit, it’s been frequented by celebrities such as Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, Orlando Bloom and Quentin Tarantino - so you’re in with a chance of star spotting on the dancefloor.
