Close to the bustling waterfront and within walking distance of Hondarribia's lovely sandy beach, the charming Hotel Rio Bidasoa has an attractive garden with a pool (June-Sept) and a shady terrace where meals and drinks can be served. The accommodation is stylish, there is a gastro bar (closed Sun/Mon) and it's lunchtime restaurant, which is also open Saturday evening, has a good local reputation.

Also known as Fuenterrabia, this beautiful old walled frontier town is on a pretty estuary and is one of the Basque country's 'must see' places. It is a colourful fishing port as well as a popular seaside resort that is famous for its gastronomy which easily rivals that found in San Sebastian. The harbour area with its pretty, brightly coloured houses is a pleasure to wander around and is where you will find most of the excellent bars and restaurants that offer some of the best seafood and tapas/pintxos in Spain. Alongside this is the old town with its maze of cobblestone streets full of beautiful Basque houses adorned with ornate balconies and the old castle that is now a renowned Parador. Hondarribia also has a lovely sandy beach and a seafront promenade.

For a change of scene, San Sebastian is only half an hour away by car or if you prefer not to drive, there is a regular bus service. Alternatively, you can take the ferry across the river to the pretty French town of Hendaye and its lovely long sandy beach.
