The Hotel les Jardins de Bakéa is a super little hotel with traditional Basque décor and a beautifully maintained garden. The staff here pride themselves on good service with a smile so with breakfast under the trees on the summer terrace and a superb gourmet restaurant (closed Mon 16/9-15/7) with a wine list to match - what more could you ask for. This is a favourite of previous guests. Pet accepted 8€/night.
Right on the Spanish border and with easy road access, the tiny Basque village of Biriatou is a real hidden gem. Perched on the side of a hill it has fabulous views over the Bidassoa valley and is the starting point for over 60 marked walking trails including the GR10.
Hendaye, with its lovely beach and resort centre, is just a short drive - a free shuttle runs from the village in July and August - or cross the border into Spain and enjoy beautiful San Sebastian.
