The location of the Hotel Le Fruitier in relation to Cherbourg and the A84 access road makes it ideal for sightseeing this lovely area. The small town of Villedieu les Poêles is picturesque and is in itself interesting with its world famous bell foundry & copper shops, both within walking distance. Run by welcoming owners and staff this hotel offers tranquil and comfortable accommodation including a pleasant bar lounge with terrace along with its restaurant, L'Atelier, next door (closed 20 Dec-5 Jan) which has a modern feel and offers traditional cuisine in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Lovely Villedieu les Poêles, one of the oldest towns in Normandy, is literally 'God's Town of Frying Pans' and copper shops tempt you from all sides. Interestingly its inhabitants are called Sourdins, which translated means deaf, as the continual hammering involved in preparing the copper caused most of the workers to become deaf. It has also been involved in the making of church bells since the Middle Ages and the world famous foundry is well worth a visit to watch the craftsmen at work. One of the best ways to enjoy Villedieu is to take a stroll around its cobblestone streets and the interesting little corners and courtyards that they hide. There are numerous information boards, in both English and French, posted around the streets, that chart the town’s history and point out places of interest - the tourist office can provide a map.
