Hotel La Croix Blanche Fontevraud 3*

The lovely La Croix Blanche is just opposite Fontevraud's Abbey and was originally a coaching inn dating back to the 17th century. Inside, its authentic features offset beautifully against modern comforts to create stylish accommodation whilst outside you can relax by the heated pool (end May-mid Sept) or on the lovely flower-bedecked terrace. The hotel also has an excellent informal restaurant - Le Plantagenêt - where menus feature typical French cuisine and local specialities. Superior and ground floor rooms, which are more spacious and have a walk-in shower, are available as well as historic mini suites which provide tea and coffee making facilities (extra charges apply). Pets not accepted.

The small market town of Fontevraud is set around L'Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, a vast ancient abbey rich in history and culture. Home to the splendid effigies of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart, it also has an exquisite modern art museum where masterpieces include Renoir and Gauguin and delicate sculptures and artefacts from around the world are on display. For 2024 the exhibition is based on the works and life of Bernard Buffet.

Exquisite towns, the river Loire, vineyards and fabulous chateaux are within easy reach of the Croix Blanche whether you wish to travel on foot or by car. Or why not discover the tranquil surroundings and the National Park by bicycle (for hire from reception).
