Hotel du Château 3*

A warm welcome awaits you at the aptly named Hotel du Château which is in a lovely position alongside the Nantes-Brest canal and has fabulous views of the castle opposite. The hotel is traditional in style with simple but charming accommodation and has a good restaurant (closed Fri/Sat/Sun (Oct-Mar) where you can dine on the terrace in summer and choose from menus bursting with classic French dishes. The attractive medieval town of Josselin has bags of history and some pretty impressive splendours, one of the most important of which is its basilica - if you have the energy the climb of over 100 steps to the top of the belltower is well worth the effort for the lovely views over the town. Another popular highlight is the 12th century turreted château which is open for visits from April to October. Built by the Rohan family, it is still owned and lived in by their descendants. The converted stables house a fascinating doll museum and a tour of the well maintained gardens provides a lovely way to pass a warm sunny afternoon. Beautiful half timbered houses line the cobbled streets of the old town which is packed with tempting gift shops, pavement cafés, bars and bistros, and on Saturday there is a lively farmers' market that sells everything from cheese to live chickens.
