The family-run Hotel de l'Océan could not be better located. Just across the road from the Sables Blanc beach, the views across the bay at dusk provide some of the best sunsets around. It's also only a pleasant half hour walk along the esplanade to the centre and old town (15 mins via back streets). The staff speak English and are on hand to give a friendly welcome whilst the accommodation, with its nautical feel, is spacious, bright and airy. Facilities include a covered, heated outdoor pool where the sides and roof can be removed in warmer weather, a sauna and a large restaurant (closed Sunday) with panoramic views over the bay.
As well as being France's third most important fishing port, Concarneau isa very popular holiday resort well known for its charming 'ville close', a fortified town that stands on a rocky island in the harbour, reached by a little stone bridge. Although small in size, it is one of Brittany's most visited sites so can get busy in the height of the summer, but with its picturesque paved streets lined with shops and restaurants, and old granite houses it's very attractive and well worth a visit. There is also the Musée dela Pêche where you can learn all about the fishing industry and even climb aboard an old trawler, after which you can walk round the ramparts and take in the lovely views across the bay. Elsewhere in town there is a good indoor food market, a Marinarium (marine biology centre), the lovely Château de Keriolet and, in summer, boat trips to the beautiful Iles de Glénan. Furthermore, if you are feeling energetic after strolling along the promenade beside the corniche, there are several scenic footpaths that start locally including the coastal path to Sables Blancs beach from Quai de la Croix and another one that is family friendly and runs through Kérandon wood. And if you are lucky enough to be here in mid August, don't miss the Filets Bleus (Blue Nets) festival, a traditional Breton celebration of the town's fishing industry.
