Hotel de la Baie 4*

The superb Hotel de la Baie is opposite the beach in the small coastal resort of Donville les Bains on the outskirts of Granville (3km). The contemporary decor and furnishings give a feel of spaciousness and the added benefit of an indoor seawater pool and thalassotherapy centre makes this a lovely place in which to spend a few days. A good buffet breakfast starts the day and the restaurant opens out onto a large decked terrace where you can dine on warm evenings. Granville, with its busy port, aquarium and casino is a pleasant walk from here if you prefer not to drive. Pet accepted 20€/night.

Granville is a quaint seaside resort with a busy port and an ancient walled town up above. The port is France's most important for shellfish, particularly whelks but also cockles, scallops and clams so this is a good place to enjoy the seafood dishes seen on most of the restaurant menus. Within the ramparts of the old town you'll find grand houses, galleries, shops, crèperies and restaurants as well as 3 museums, one of which was once the childhood home of Christian Dior and is now dedicated to him and his work. It has lovely perfume gardens too.

There is also a ferry that runs from the harbour over to the Chausey Islands (15km) which are car free and a place of great natural beauty. The main island, there are 15 in total, is the only you can visit and has a few shops, a couple of holiday homes and a beautiful beach. It’s a great day out.
