Extremadura

With its stunning rural landscape of rocky pastures, rugged mountains and lush river basins, where 30% of the region is protected in national parks and nature reserves, Extremadura is the place to go to spend some time at one with nature - and explore the cultured and heritage-filled cities all around.

An inland region, Extremadura is home to some of the most beautiful rustic landscapes in Spain and the Monfragüe National Park is designate a World Biosphere Reserve. With an average population of just 26 inhabitants per km², Extremadura really is a place where you can feel a close relationship with nature. Perfect for nature tourism, there is much to do amongst the countryside from walking the famous Roman route, the Via de la Plata, to watersports on the rivers and some fantastic birdwatching opportunities.

The mark of the Romans is still visible in Extremadura with the 21 monuments listed in the archaeological ensemble at Mérida, an ancient city where a Roman theatre, ancient Roman homes full of murals and mosiacs, bridges and aqueducts and a Temple of Diana can all be found in remarkable condition. At Cáceres, the Old Town has much wonderful medieval architecture to admire whilst the Monastery of Guadalupe is a spectacular Gothic complex that is UNESCO protected and is still an important pilgrimage site for Catholics today.

Quaint in its rustic simplicity, Extremadura is an incredibly beautiful region and excellent for those who love discovering the great outdoors, with some fascinating culture and history thrown in!
