Dinard

Blue and white beach huts at Dinard's Plage de l'Ecluse

About Dinard

Dinard in Brittany is a fashionable seaside resort that first came to popularity during the Belle Êpoque of the 19th century.

Originally a little fishing village at the mouth of the River Rance, in the 19th century, Dinard became the place to be seen for French and international aristocrats. Magnificent villas, created in an eclectic mixture of architectural styles sprang up all along the coast of Dinard.

Places to visit

Take a walk along the seafront and the coastal paths to discover these wonderful buildings which are now protected. The town has 3 very pretty beaches, especially the main beach, Plage de l'Écluse, to enjoy some time sunbathing. Known as the garden city by the sea, there is much greenery to enjoy, especially the promenade Clair de Lune, a moonlight walk between Plage du Prieuré and Pointe du Moulinet, where the gardens are illuminated at night with music playing. For over 20 years Dinard has played host to the annual Festival du Film Britannique de Dinard in October, showcasing the best of British films to a European audience. You might even spot some British and French stars!

Explore the coast and along the River Rance with boat trips, or go kayaking and boating on the river. You can even take a guided tour in a kayak, as well as tours on land around the town where you can discover more about the history of Dinard. Why not try your hand at something new with lots of artistic and cultural workshops available including watercolour painting, sculpture, tapestry weaving, tango and more? There is also plenty to do for those who like an active holiday with surfing and boating schools as well as tennis clubs, horse riding, and pilot lessons. Or, if you are looking for relaxation, try Dinard's spas for thalassotherapy and beauty treatments for a rejuvenating wellness break. Kids are also well catered for with puppet shows, pony rides, mini golf and a wonderful 5 acre park, the Parc du Port Breton, overlooking the Plage du Prieuré where 40 different species of animals, including deer, donkey, wallabies, pheasants and llamas are looked after and the children will enjoy playing in the playgrounds!

Shopping and eating

Art lovers will find much to see and buy in Dinard's 20 art galleries, as well as the town's antiques shops and quaint boutiques. Try some local fresh produce at the Place Crolard market, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday throughout the year. Dinard has some great crêperies where you can enjoy crêpes and galettes served traditionally with cider, or try one of Dinard's many restaurants for some excellent fine dining, with lots of exquisite locally-caught seafood on the menu.

Dinard lies just across the River Rance from St Malo. You can get the ferry to St Malo from Portsmouth, reaching Dinard in 25 minutes, crossing Le barage de le Rance.
